![]() ![]() Here are some of my favorite meal blessings and poems. For a long time, we read a page from Barbara Helen Berger’s book Animalia. These little rituals mean so much to children. We also have a few books that we bring out on occasion that have well-loved poems. I collect these little poems, along with standard blessings and keep some in a little notebook. ![]() In this way, we also take time to honor the cycle of seasons. I have found this moment before a meal to be a great time to read poetry and little short stories that relate to the seasons, the weather and special occasions. We have special poems and songs for spring, rainy weather, snow, birthdays and gardening. Taking that time to calm our nervous and digestive systems also helps us relax, slow down and promotes healthy digestion. I think it helps bring us all together for a moment of silence and communion before sharing our meal together. ![]() I love lighting a candle and saying a blessing before starting a meal. My sisters continue to do the same with their families. We would hold hands and pray and at the end we would squeeze whomever’s hands we were holding three times, representing the three words “I love you.” (If you have siblings, you might guess that I didn’t always squeeze my sister’s hand!) This simple tradition has meant enough to me that I have taught it to every child I have cared for since. In the eternal mansions that You are even now preparing for us.I grew up saying grace with my family before every dinner. Grant, too, that we may finally meet these men and women, Walking reverently in the ways that they have left behind them. They knew the joy and peace that is the product of labor. The men and women that worked on the land. The Lord lift up His countenance upon him/her The Lord make His Face to shine upon him/her In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal lifeĪnd we commit his/her body to the ground: May the souls of all the faithful departed, Let not the souls which Thou hast created Or through the length of time are forgotten Who have no particular friends and intercessorsĮither through the negligence of those who are alive, Welcome you now that you have gone forth from this life. May holy Mary, the angels, and all the saints Who formed you from the dust of the earth. I commend you, my dear (name) to almighty God, I may see them in the joy of eternal brightness. Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, Where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, In this life you embraced them with your tender love We humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Prayer for All The Faithful DepartedĮternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May his/her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,Īmen. In the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, Go forth, Christian soul, from this world Here are some Catholic prayers for the dead you can use to intercede for the souls of the dearly departed: Prayer for the Dying Offering a prayer for them is also a way of remembering them, a sort of tribute to their memories. Even if they’re not with us physically, the memories we shared, and the impact they left in our lives will forever stay with us. This is why the rosary includes the Fatima Prayer so that we will always include in our prayers a plea for all souls especially those in need of God’s mercy.Īside from what the scriptures are telling us, we pray for the dead simply because we love them. If many people will pray for those poor souls in purgatory, God – in his mercy and kindness – will surely hear our pleas. The righteous will be with God in paradise but those who did wrong will be sent either to hell or purgatory.īut just like how the saints can intercede for us, our prayers can help our deceased brothers and sisters too. And on the day of judgment, each of us will receive the reward or punishment we deserve. Our prayers, according to Catholic tradition, can save the souls of our dearly departed on the day of judgment.Īccording to the scriptures, after we die, we will be judged based on our actions while we were living ( Revelations 20:11-13 ). For Catholics, prayer is as essential to the dead as breathing is to the living. ![]()
